A hereditary disease that appears usually in early childhood, inherited as an autosomal recessive monogenic trait. Involves functional disorder of the exocrine glands; the digestion is complicated by a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes; breathing is made difficult by mucus accumulation in airways; there is also excessive loss of salt in the sweat. It is called also fibrocystic disease of the pancreas, mucoviscidosis.
