zoot suit

noun. A dandyish form of clothing characterized by excessively long and broad sleeves, baggy pants, and broad-brimmed hats affected by Mexican American youth during the early 1940s. Zoot suits were deemed wasteful and unpatriotic by white and African Americans who supported the war effort. Anger with the display of conspicuous consumption during a time of rationing was one of the factors (along with racism and a vague sense of vigilantism) contributing to the eruption of the 1943 Zoot Suit riots in Los Angeles.
