Beginning across the Continental Divide from the headwaters of the Ivishak River, the Wind River flows southeast from the Philip Smith Mountains to join the East Fork of the Chandalar River south of Arctic Village. The 98-mile long Wind River, located entirely within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, is fed by melting snows and remnant glaciers in mountains more than 7,000 feet high. The Wind River is known for its wide variety of vegetation and scenery. Wildlife characteristic of boreal forests is found on the south slope of the refuge.
