* The malt whiskies are rich and full-bodied.
* Distilleries in this zone: Glen Scotia, Glengyle (closed, now refurbishing) and Springbank.
* In the 19th century, there were 34 distilleries.
* Other regions: Highland, Lowland and Islay
* Sub-regions: Speyside and Island (parts of the Highlands)
